5 Ways to Boost Your Skin Health This Year
With the new year upon us, you may be looking for ways to keep your skin as fresh and healthy as possible. Here are five tips to help.

As you look ahead to 2025, you want to put your best face forward. That means taking care of your complexion and overall skin health. The good news is that making a few lifestyle choices goes a long way toward boosting the wellness of your body’s largest organ.

More good news: We’re here to help. As an expert in skin health, Kenneth Warrick, MD, FAAD, can evaluate your skin at a dermatology consultation. This allows him to make personalized recommendations you can employ this year. Visit us at Atlantic Dermatology in Longs, South Carolina, for options tailored to you.

Generally speaking, though, everyone can boost their skin health this year with these suggestions.

#1: Wear sunscreen

The sun ages your skin fast. This process, called photoaging, causes wrinkles and uneven pigmentation. More importantly, it puts you at risk for skin cancer.

To keep your skin as youthful and healthy as possible, be diligent in your sun protection. Wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 whenever you’re outside. Reapply throughout the day to keep your skin protected.

If you like the look of tanned skin, use self-tanner. It’s a much safer way to get a glow.

#2: Avoid smoking

Smoking harms your skin, damaging the collagen and elastin that support your skin’s structure. To keep your skin as healthy as possible throughout 2025, avoid tobacco.

If you’re currently a smoker and you’re ready to quit, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have resources to get you started.

#3: Get regular skin cancer screenings

Skin cancer is both common and treatable. If we catch it early, we can usually target and remove it before it has a chance to spread.

Dr. Warrick recommends a skin cancer screening every few years, with more frequent screenings if you have a personal or family history of this health issue. We offer screenings right here at our office.

#4: Eat a healthy diet

What you put into your body impacts your overall health, including your skin health. A balanced diet of whole foods is a great place to start.

You can also add foods that specifically improve skin health, including:

  • Avocados
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Fatty fish
  • Walnuts
  • Broccoli

Green tea can help your skin as well.

#5: Use care when cleaning your skin

Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, which play a big role in helping maintain its defensive barrier. When you bathe or shower, use warm water instead of hot. Use mild and gentle soaps, and don’t scrub your skin.

These are a few general tips to get you started. For a more personalized approach to maintaining your skin health in 2025, call our office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Warrick, or use our online booking feature to make an appointment.
